Preparing for Your Electrolysis Appointment

Are you excited to embrace a more joyful feeling in your skin? We have put together some suggestions to help you feel at ease and get the most out of your upcoming electrolysis session.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water 24 hours before your appointment is essential. Try to avoid alcohol and salty foods during this time. Proper hydration helps the electrolysis process work more effectively by allowing the radio frequency to target the hair growth tissues better. Dehydration might lessen the effectiveness of your treatment.

Let Your Hair Grow a Bit

Please refrain from shaving, trimming, or using hair removal creams at least 2-3 days before your appointment. And it’s important not to pluck, tweeze, or wax the unwanted hair while undergoing electrolysis. I know this might feel uncomfortable initially, but trust me, it will be okay. We need about 1 to 3 millimeters of hair growth to treat the area successfully. A simple test is to see if you can pinch the hair between your thumb and index finger—if you can, it’s long enough. Remember, you’re beautiful and amazing, just as you are!

Watch Your Caffeine and Sugar Intake

If you’re sensitive to stimulants, consider limiting caffeine and sugar on the day of your session. These can make you feel more sensitive during the treatment. If you love your morning coffee, schedule your appointment for the late afternoon so the caffeine has time to wear off. This is entirely up to you if you don’t usually feel extra sensitive.

Pause Harsh Skin Treatments

Stop using strong topical skin products like retinoids, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid peels at least 2-3 days before your appointment. Your goal is to avoid dry or irritated skin during the treatment. Light exfoliation is okay, and gently using a washcloth or a mild scrub within 24 hours of your appointment can help open up your pores.

Avoid Sun Exposure

Try to stay out of the sun in the days surrounding your appointment. Sun exposure can irritate your skin and dilate blood vessels, which isn’t ideal for the treatment. After electrolysis, your skin might also be more sensitive to sunlight. Wearing a hat or applying sunscreen can help protect your skin.

Come Fresh and Clean

Showering on the day of your appointment helps ensure your skin is clean and hydrated. If you’re wearing makeup or deodorant and we’re treating those areas, we’ll need to clean them beforehand. It’s best to arrive with fresh skin and a light moisturizer. After the appointment, avoiding applying makeup or deodorant for a few hours is also a good idea to let your skin breathe. If you need to go somewhere afterward, you can bring your makeup to reapply, but giving your skin a little break is beneficial. An anti-inflammatory cream will be applied to the treated area after treatment.

Skip Exercise and Swimming for Now

You have a good reason to take it easy! Try to avoid activities that make you sweat heavily on the day of your appointment. Excessive sweating or swimming can introduce bacteria into the hair follicles we’ve treated, which might cause minor infections or breakouts. Once your skin has had some time to recover, you can get back to your regular activities the next day.

Additional Tips

  • Managing Sensitivity: If you’re concerned about discomfort, consider taking a pain reliever like acetaminophen or ibuprofen about an hour before your appointment. We also offer over-the-counter numbing cream, a sample of which will be included in your Introduction Bag that you receive at your consultation appointment. We will give you a sample packet of the topical anesthetic at your consultation appointment that you can apply 90 minutes before you arrive, which can help with comfort.
  • Bikini Area Treatment: If we’re working on the bikini area, please trim the hair to about 1-3 millimeters—not too short.

When to Reschedule

  • Illness: If you are sick, please wait until you’ve been symptom-free.
  • Sunburn: Wait at least 3 days after a sunburn before coming in if in the same area as treatment.
  • Recent Fillers: If you’ve had cosmetic fillers like Botox or Juvederm, please wait 3 days before treating the same area.
  • Laser Treatments: After laser treatments, wait 1 week before electrolysis in the same area to ensure your skin is hydrated.
  • Cold Sores: If you have an active fever blister or cold sore, please wait until it has fully healed.
